Indigenous Issues and Considerations in Assisting Indigenous People in the Canadian System
The presentation by Christine Ninham and Maureen Bulbrooke will touch on the legal dehumanization of Indigenous people through legislation, as part of the governments Indian policy of assimilation and elimination of Indigenous people. They will focus on child welfare legislation and how the Federal Indian Act (An Act respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis children, youth and families) was enacted, along with the specific sections of the CYFSA, in hopes to make change for Indigenous people. They will also provide some basic tips when engaging with Indigenous families as the systematic racism is so ingrained that it is important to change the narrative and way of thinking to create change. Presented and recorded September 23, 2024.
